Prevalence of Multisyllabic Words in Content Area Texts

Each discipline places different literacy demands on students. This applies to word-level reading skills as well as text level. One chief characteristic of content area texts is the prevalence of multisyllabic words. Accurate and fluent identification of these words is vital, as they provide much of the new information that students need to access concepts and construct meaning as they read.
