Prevalence of Multisyllabic Words in Content Area Texts

Each discipline places different literacy demands on students. This applies to word-level reading skills as well as text level. One chief characteristic of content area texts is the prevalence of multisyllabic words. Accurate and fluent identification of these words is vital, as they provide much of the new information that students need to access concepts and construct meaning as they read.

English Language Arts (ELA)

A metaphor is a type of analogy and is closely related to other figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison, or resemblance including allegory, hyperbole, and simile.

Math

The Pythagorean theorem is named after the Greek mathematician Pythagoras who by tradition is credited with its discovery, although it’s often argued that knowledge of the theorem predates him.

Science

The climate includes conditions in the atmosphere and the ocean, and is often described in terms of intensity, frequency, and duration of severe and non-severe weather events.
